Grief
Alayo Dance Company performs 'Grief' for week 3 of the 2011 CubaCaribe Festival.
Grief examines and explores physical, spiritual, and material loss in the 21st century in relation to war, immigration, natural disaster, and economic downturn.
Conscious of such current, pressing issues, Company Director, Ramon Ramos Alayo taps into personal grief stemming from the death of his mother several years ago, and considers what psychologist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross refers to as the Five Stages of Grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Ramos collaborates with Kate Northcott, a professional psychotherapist to interview artists, choreographers, and community members in order to facilitate effective dialogue in a safe space, and integrates individual experiences of grief into this project.
GUEST CHOREOGRAPHERS are Joti Singh, artistic director of Duniya Dance and Drum Company, and Cuban-trained Nelson Reyes.
